Alumni Spotlight: Will Emery

For Will Emery, an apprenticeship with LSP provided the perfect first step toward his ambition of becoming a project manager. Combining practical experience with professional learning, it gave him the knowledge, confidence, and skills to grow into his career in the construction industry.

Why an Apprenticeship?

Will saw the apprenticeship as a clear opportunity to begin his career journey:

“I wanted to learn more about how the construction industry works and start building a path toward becoming a project manager. I saw it as a great opportunity to get some hands-on experience and take the first real step in kickstarting my career.”

“I also wanted the chance to get hands on in the workplace whilst working towards a qualification at the same time.”

Skills and Knowledge Gained

His apprenticeship gave him valuable technical and academic development:

“Throughout the course, I was able to gain a much deeper understanding of the construction industry, including how different roles and processes come together on a project. In addition to this, I developed practical skills in both surveying and using CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software, which gave me valuable insight into the technical side of construction work.”

“At the same time, I also worked on improving my core academic skills, particularly in maths and English, which helped strengthen my overall communication and problem-solving abilities.”

Shaping a Career Path

The experience helped Will focus on his future goals:

“This experience really helped me build confidence in my ability to pursue a career as a project manager. It gave me a clearer idea of what the role involves and reassured me that I have the potential to develop the right skills and mindset needed to succeed in that position.”

Achievements and Milestones

Completing his apprenticeship was just the beginning. For Will, taking on full responsibility for his first project marked a huge step forward:

“My biggest achievement after successfully completing my apprenticeship was taking full responsibility for my first project and seeing it through from start to finish on my own. It was a major milestone for me, as it not only tested the knowledge and skills I had developed during my training but also proved to myself—and others—that I was capable of managing a project independently and delivering successful results.”

Recognition and Opportunities

Will’s work ethic has earned him trust and responsibility on major projects:

“I’ve been fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to contribute to several large-scale projects. Being involved in these projects has allowed me to gain valuable hands-on experience, work alongside experienced professionals, and better understand the complexity and coordination required to deliver work on a much larger scale.”

A Proud Moment

Looking back, one particular achievement stands out above the rest:

“Successfully completing my End-Point Assessment (EPA) with a distinction is a moment I’m genuinely proud of. It was the result of a lot of hard work, dedication, and continuous learning throughout my apprenticeship. Achieving such a high result gave me a real sense of accomplishment and confirmed that all the effort I put in truly paid off.”

Advice for Future Apprentices

Will encourages anyone considering an apprenticeship to take the opportunity:

“By undertaking an apprenticeship with LSP, you’ll gain a genuine, in-depth understanding of how the construction industry operates on a day-to-day basis. You’ll also have the chance to get hands-on experience with practical skills such as surveying and CAD drawing, giving you valuable insight into both the technical and operational sides of the industry.”
