Alumni Spotlight: Kane Andrews
Alumni Spotlight: Kane Andrews
For Kane Andrews, an apprenticeship wasn’t just about gaining skills - it was about finding a new direction. After completing a bachelor’s degree in a subject he realised wasn’t the right fit, Kane was looking for a fresh start.
“Before my apprenticeship, I had completed a Bachelor's degree in a field that I realised I wasn't truly passionate about,” Kane shared. “I was in need of a new path, and my apprenticeship provided just that. An apprenticeship in project controls was a chance to gain hands-on industry experience while developing practical skills that directly impact real world projects.”
Developing New Skills
Throughout his apprenticeship, Kane built both technical knowledge and professional confidence.
“During my apprenticeship, I gained a variety of technical and professional skills that have proved invaluable to my career. I developed strong analytical abilities, particularly in monitoring project progress, managing schedules, and tracking costs. I learned how to use project controls software programs effectively, which is vital during data handling and reporting. Beyond the technical side, the apprenticeship enhanced my ability to communicate clearly with stakeholders and collaborate effectively across multiple teams.”
A Turning Point
Kane describes his apprenticeship as the pivotal moment that changed his career path.
“My apprenticeship in project controls has been a turning point in my career path. It provided an opportunity to move from an area of study I wasn't passionate about, and into a role that genuinely excites me and plays to my strengths. The apprenticeship not only provided me with technical expertise, but also gave me the confidence to take ownership of tasks and contribute to project outcomes in the workplace.”
Achievements and Recognition
Since completing his programme, Kane has taken on greater responsibilities across increasingly complex projects.
“Since completing my apprenticeship, one of my biggest achievements has been the opportunity to work on multiple high-complexity projects within my workplace. Each project has been challenging but rewarding, and I've been trusted to take on far greater responsibility as a result. Being relied upon to oversee key aspects of project controls and contribute to important decisions has been a real milestone for me.”
“I have been recognised for going above and beyond since completing my apprenticeship. One of the biggest forms of recognition has been the trust placed in me to take on greater responsibility across a number of projects, often stepping into roles that required leadership and initiative. Being given the opportunity to contribute to critical projects and knowing that my input is valued has been a real highlight.”
Proud Progress
Looking back, Kane is most proud of how far he’s come - both personally and professionally.
“What I am most proud of is the personal and professional growth I have achieved. I started out with limited practical experience, and through dedication and continuous learning, I have developed into someone who can make meaningful contributions to projects and support colleagues effectively. My greatest success is knowing that I have come a long way and now have a solid foundation for a long-term career in project controls.”
Kane’s Advice
Kane encourages future apprentices to make the most of every opportunity:
“My advice to anyone considering an apprenticeship with LSP would be to embrace every opportunity to learn and get involved. Apprenticeships are excellent ways of learning and developing technical skills and putting them into practice in the real world. Enjoy the journey!”
