Why an Apprenticeship?
Erik’s motivation to start his apprenticeship came from a clear vision:
“I was motivated to start my apprenticeship because I wanted to combine practical, hands-on experience with professional learning. I saw it as the best way to build real-world skills, gain industry knowledge, and learn directly from experienced colleagues, while also creating a strong foundation to develop my career long term.”
Skills and Knowledge Gained
Throughout his apprenticeship, Erik developed both technical and professional skills:
“During my apprenticeship I developed key skills in project planning, scheduling, cost control, and risk management. I also gained hands-on experience using industry standard software, interpreting project data, and producing accurate progress reports.”
“Alongside the technical knowledge, I built strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills, which helped me to work effectively with different stakeholders and contribute to successful project delivery.”
Shaping a Career in Estimating
Erik’s apprenticeship also played a key role in guiding his career path:
“During my apprenticeship I developed key skills in project planning, scheduling, cost control, and risk management. I also gained hands-on experience using industry standard software, interpreting project data, and producing accurate progress reports. Along side the technical knowledge, I built strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills, this helped me to work effectively with different stakeholders and contribute to successful project delivery.”
Achievements and Recognition
Since completing his apprenticeship, Erik has achieved significant milestones:
“One of my biggest achievements has been progressing into an Estimating role, where I take responsibility for accurate cost planning and supporting key projects.”
He also went above and beyond by innovating in his role:
“I developed and researched software that enabled me to create animated videos showing how projects will be built. These visual demonstrations clearly highlight time-saving opportunities for clients, which has directly contributed to more successful bids and strengthened my impact within the business.”
“Developing animated videos to demonstrate project builds and identify time-saving opportunities was not part of my initial responsibilities. This initiative improved client understanding, contributed to more successful bids, and earned positive feedback from both management and clients.”
What He’s Most Proud Of
When asked what he’s most proud of, Erik shared:
“I am most proud of being able to support our team and contribute to successful projects while also passing on my knowledge to current apprentices. Helping them develop their skills and understanding of the role has been very rewarding, and its satisfying to see my experience making a positive impact on both their growth and the success of our business.”
Advice for Future Apprentices
Finally, here is Erik’s advice for anyone considering an apprenticeship:
“I would advice anyone considering an apprenticeship with Learning Skills Partnership to embrace every opportunity to learn, ask questions, and get hands-on experience. Be proactive, take responsibility for your development, and don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. The apprenticeship provides a solid foundation, builds real-world skills, and opens doors to a variety of career paths.”
