Alumni Spotlight: Charlotte Rowberry
Alumni Spotlight: Charlotte Rowberry
Instead of taking the university route, Charlotte Rowberry embraced an apprenticeship to learn, earn, and gain real-world experience.
“I knew I didn’t want to go to university but also wanted to continue learning. An apprenticeship offered the best of both worlds. It was also appealing that I would be able to experience the real working world and earn alongside studies.”
Building Key Skills
Throughout her apprenticeship, Charlotte developed both practical and soft skills that shaped her career in project controls.
“I have developed practical skills such as scheduling, reporting, and cost control, along with learning how to use software relevant to project controls, such as Microsoft Project and SAP. I have also gained a solid understanding of project management processes such as lifecycles, governance, and earned value management.
In terms of soft skills, I have developed my communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.”
Shaping Her Career Path
Charlotte’s apprenticeship opened doors to different areas of project controls and helped her build a strong foundation.
“Going through the apprenticeship route has given me the opportunity to explore all areas of project controls such as estimating, risk, and planning, which has enabled me to develop a solid foundation of knowledge and skills. Now I have experience in all the areas, I can decide which I like most and build on those areas.”
Achievements and Milestones
One of Charlotte’s proudest achievements was successfully balancing her studies with real-world projects.
“My biggest achievement was probably passing through my apprenticeship EPA while supporting real-life projects through their lifecycles. It gives a real sense of achievement when you are supporting live projects alongside learning the theory. I think it gives you a more in-depth understanding of the application.”
Recognition and Feedback
Charlotte’s commitment and hard work did not go unnoticed.
“I recently won the Early Careers Award at the showcase event for end of programme. This was for completing the apprenticeship with good grades and also supporting two of the newer apprentices within their roles and with academic aspects. It’s rewarding to see them progress through the scheme and I enjoy supporting them.
I also received positive feedback at the end of my apprenticeship and rolled off the scheme in a more senior role than an apprentice would usually.”
A Moment of Pride
For Charlotte, one success stands out above all others.
“A simple response, but completing my apprenticeship and accepting a role within the team as a Senior Project Controller. Before joining LSP, I had a poor experience with a previous provider so felt a bit let down. However, LSP picked it up and supported me through the qualification and changed my experience for the better.”
Charlotte’s Advice
Her advice for anyone considering an apprenticeship with LSP is clear:
“I would say go for it. The combination of working on real projects while learning is invaluable - all while earning money!”
Charlotte’s journey is proof that apprenticeships provide the opportunity to gain technical expertise, grow personally and professionally, and step confidently into a rewarding career path.
