Theme of the Month - Sexism and Sexual Harassment: Women in Construction
The construction industry has long been recognised as one of the most male-dominated sectors in the UK. While progress has been made in recent years, women working in construction can still face significant challenges - from unconscious bias and stereotyping to more serious issues such as sexism and sexual harassment. Addressing these challenges is not just about compliance or reputation; it is about creating a safe, respectful, and inclusive industry where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
Women continue to bring vital skills, leadership, technical expertise, and innovation to construction roles across site management, engineering, project controls, surveying, and skilled trades. Yet despite their contribution, many still report experiencing inappropriate comments, exclusion from opportunities, unequal treatment, or behaviour that crosses the line into harassment. These experiences can impact confidence, career progression, mental wellbeing, and long-term retention within the sector.
Sexism in construction may appear in subtle forms — assumptions about capability, being overlooked for certain tasks, or being expected to “prove” competence more than male colleagues. In more serious cases, sexual harassment can include unwanted comments, gestures, messages, or behaviour that creates an intimidating, hostile, or degrading working environment. Regardless of form, these behaviours are unacceptable and have no place in a modern workforce.
As the industry continues to evolve, there is growing recognition that diversity strengthens performance. Organisations that actively promote inclusion, challenge inappropriate behaviour, and provide clear reporting mechanisms are not only supporting their employees — they are building stronger, more resilient teams. Employers, managers, apprentices, and site leaders all have a role to play in setting standards and fostering a culture of mutual respect.
