In its efforts to address radicalisation, the British government emphasises the importance of understanding Fundamental British Values. These values form a core part of our society, and a refusal to accept or a strong criticism of them may signal that someone is moving toward more extreme beliefs.

The Rule of Law

The Rule of Law is a pivotal part of ensuring that Britain’s democracy can function properly. Without specific laws related to each part of modern society, it would be very difficult to ensure that citizens follow the principles of equality and fairness that underpin democracies. The Rule of Law is in place to protect people and their property from criminal acts but also to ensure that the government acts in the best interests of the people it represents. It is intended to be a guide as to what is acceptable and unacceptable in society.

The United Kingdom has three legal systems:

Democracy

The United Kingdom (UK) is a democracy. A democracy is a country where the people choose their government.  In the UK, there are too many people to ask and too many decisions to take, therefore representatives are elected to make decisions.

Mutual Respect and Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs

Mutual respect is to accept a person for who they are without discriminating or prejudicing against them based on that. This means that although people may be from different backgrounds or have different personalities, they can understand where the other comes from.

Individual Liberty

Individual liberty is the fundamental right of individuals to act, believe, and express themselves freely, without excessive government intervention. As a key British value and human right, it empowers personal choice and autonomy while requiring respect for the rights of others. Key examples include freedom of speech, voting, and lifestyle choices.

Key aspects of individual liberty include:

Fundamental Freedoms: This includes freedom of speech, belief, and the right to make choices about one's own life, such as education, relationships, and employment.

Limitations: Individual liberty is not absolute and operates within the boundaries of the law (Rule of Law) and with responsibility toward others.

Legal Protections: It is protected by constitutional conventions and laws, such as the UK's Human Rights Act 1998.

Contrast with Authority: It represents areas of life, such as freedom of movement, that are generally considered to be outside direct government control.

Individual liberty enables people to pursue their own goals and live in a manner that they choose.
