What is online gambling?

Online gambling is any form of gambling where a bet or stake is placed over the internet. This can include online casinos, bingo, sports betting, lotteries and other gambling-style games accessed through a computer, tablet or mobile phone.

What makes something gambling?

For an activity to be considered gambling, it generally involves three key elements:

💷 A stake
This is the money or something of value that a person risks when placing a bet.

🎲 An element of chance
There is uncertainty around the outcome. Although some forms of gambling can involve knowledge or decision-making, chance plays a role in whether someone wins or loses.

🏆 A prize
This is the money or other reward that can be won if the outcome is successful.

Why is online gambling awareness important?

Because gambling is available online, it can be easy to access and can sometimes feel separate from spending real money. Understanding how gambling works and recognising the risks can help people make more informed decisions.
