Line Manager of the Month - August 25
This month, we’re proud to recognise Sam Ryding from Virgin Media O2 as our Line Manager of the Month! Nominated by apprentice Jay, Sam’s guidance, patience, and consistent support have clearly had a lasting impact on his team, helping Jay grow in confidence and capability from day one.
From the beginning of Jay’s apprenticeship, Sam has been there every step of the way, ensuring that tasks are not only completed but also that learning and development remain a priority. As Jay explains, “He demonstrates true leadership through his consistency, patience, and commitment to developing others, as well as improving processes within our team. Sam has taken the time to help me understand how our team, wider business and suppliers operate.”
Sam’s approach goes beyond simply assigning work. He actively encourages Jay to think critically and reflect on her progress, connecting theoretical learning to real-world project situations.
“Sam ensures I’m not only completing tasks but also growing in my confidence and capability day to day. He’s provided valuable guidance and resources on how to approach my APM learning. Sam checks in on my progress weekly and encourages reflective thinking to help me grow within my role, which helps me connect theory to real project situations. He’s constantly looking for opportunities within the team and business to expose me to for my development.”
What makes Sam particularly effective is the way he leads by example, holding high standards while explaining the reasoning behind decisions so that Jay can fully understand the context.
“He leads by example, holds high standards, and always takes the time to explain the 'why' behind decisions. This has made a big difference to my learning and development.”
Jay also highlighted Sam’s approachable nature and supportive attitude.
“Sam has a great temperament; he’s a calm, approachable, and grounded person, and he has the right qualities to be a great manager. I know I can give him a call at any time if I need support or someone to talk to, and I never feel judged. His presence creates a safe space to ask questions, reflect, and grow.”
Sam’s inclusive and empowering style has left a deep impression on Jay, fostering confidence and a sense of value within the team.
“His approach is inclusive, supportive, and empowering, which are qualities that have shaped my experience for the better since I’ve been under his management. He has truly made me feel like a valued member of the team. I don’t think he realises the impact he has made or how exceptional he is, and I am truly grateful to have a caring and considerate manager.”
