Available Construction Apprenticeships

Construction Operations Apprenticeship - Level 2

This qualification is appropriate for apprentices in the construction and built environment sector who work across a broad range of areas. It is designed to assess occupational competence in the workplace where learners must demonstrate skills and knowledge to a level required in the construction industry.

This apprenticeship training is flexible to suit all fields of general construction operations.

Mandatory units

  • Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace

  • Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace

  • Moving, Handing and Storing Resources in the Workplace

  • Establishing Work Area Protection and Safety in the Workplace

Optional units

Group B - one required:

  • Placing and finishing Non-Specialist Concrete in the Workplace (footings; oversite’s; path’s) OR

  • Installing Drainage in the Workplace (foul drainage; surface water; inspection chambers)

Group C - one required:

  • Reinstating Ground Condition in the Workplace

  • Placing and compacting concrete in the Workplace

  • Erecting and Dismantling Access/Working Platforms in the Workplace

  • Providing Temporary Excavation Support in the Workplace

  • Preparing and mixing concrete and mortars in the Workplace

  • Reinstating Excavation and Highway Surfaces in the Workplace

  • Preparing and Operating Forward Tipping Dumpers to Receive, Transport and Discharge Materials in the Workplace

  • Preparing and Operating Ride-on Rollers to Compact Materials in the Workplace

  • Preparing to and Directing and Guiding Plant and Plant Operations in the Workplace

  • Preparing and Operating Specialised Powered Tools and Equipment in the Workplace

The following qualifications will be gained:

  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Construction Operations

  • Level 2 Diploma in Construction Operations - General Construction

  • Functional Skills English and Maths Level 1 and/or 2 if applicable

Training

Training will last 18 months. Apprentices are expected to attend all teaching sessions and complete work in their own time at an average of 2 to 3 hours per week. Teaching sessions will be both in the classroom and on site completing practical tasks.

Functional Skills

Apprentices who do not already have English and maths at Grade A-C/Level 2 or above will need to complete Functional Skills at the relevant level.

Construction Contracting Operations Apprenticeship - Level 3

This qualification supports the learner to attain enabling, fundamental and transferable practical skills with associated underpinning knowledge.

It has been designed to develop and recognise skills, knowledge and competence so that apprentices can work within the construction industry or progress onto further learning.

Mandatory units

  • Operate health, safety and welfare systems in construction

  • Prepare programmes and schedules of work in construction

  • Develop and maintain working relationships and personal development in construction

  • Prepare drawing and schedules in construction

  • Assess, plan and monitor project methods and progress in construction

  • Operate project information systems in construction

Optional units - three required:

  • Prepare for, collect, analyse and present survey data in construction

  • Prepare and process invitations to tender in construction

  • Prepare estimates, bids and tenders in construction

  • Record the condition of property in construction

  • Prepare drawings and schedules in construction

  • Prepare for work operations in construction

  • Implement contract work in construction

  • Establish and maintain the dimensional control of construction works

  • Prepare for and carry out physical testing in construction

  • Assess, plan, and monitor project methods and progress in construction

  • Monitor, maintain and improve supplies of materials in construction

  • Recommend and monitor supplies of plant and equipment in construction

  • Prepare and monitor costs and accounts in construction

  • Prepare proposals and obtain feedback for the provision of products and services in construction

  • Integrate and control project design information in construction

The following qualifications will be gained:

  • Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Construction Contracting Operations

  • Level 3 Diploma in Civil Engineering

  • Functional Skills English and maths at Level 2 if applicable

Training

Digital Engineering Technician Standard - Level 3

The role is to produce detailed solutions to achieve the optimum performance of built environment projects via digital models and presentations using software, sketches and electronic visualisations. The apprentices will typically support Digital Engineers or other functional specialists in completing complex tasks using digital engineering techniques,  specifically:

  • Virtualisation and simulation of design, construction and management of assets

  • Digital measurement of design, production and management of assets

  • Communication of complex engineering principles to stakeholders digitally

  • Integration of construction data and information throughout the whole life cycle of the asset

  • Adherence to the standards and regulation of digital information

Mandatory units

  • Health, safety and welfare systems in construction and the built environment

  • Sustainable construction

  • Mathematics in construction and the built environment

  • Science and materials in construction and the built environment

  • Construction technology and design in construction and civil engineering

  • Building technology in construction

  • Project management in construction and the built environment

  • Measuring, estimating and tendering processes

  • Building surveying in construction

  • Mechanical and electrical services in construction

  • Project management in construction and the built environment

  • Public health engineering in civil engineering

The following qualifications will be gained:

  • BTEC Level 3 Construction and the Built Environment

  • NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Built Environment Design

  • Functional Skills English and maths at Level 2 if applicable

Training

Training will last 26 months. The apprentice will receive 2 to 3 week intense “work ready” BIM training, NVQ on site assessment every 8 weeks and BTEC (Block on site delivery) for 2 weeks bimonthly.

Functional Skills

Apprentices who do not already have English and maths at Grade A-C/Level 2 will need to complete this level prior to completing.
